The North Training shed opened in October 2021 and started training apprentices in February 2022.

We have a fully qualified boilermaker dedicated to the Training Shed. Evan runs the shed and teaches the apprentices how to appropriately use hand tools, read drawings, fabricate, and weld. He teaches the ins and outs of the welders and how to use them.  Including setting them up, adjusting controls, refilling wire and basic adjustments and things to look out for.

He does this in both a class like setting with the 6 apprentices, as well as one on one in order to keep them on the same level. This encourages our apprentices to feel comfortable, knowing there is someone there specifically to assist them.

On average we have 6 apprentices in the training shed at one time. This group of people changes approximately every 6-12 months, before they then move into our primary shed.

Once apprentices have been put into the training shed, they start by making stillages, which are used to hold and transport steel for Stevens.

This gives them a task to be responsible for, teaching them the basics of fabrication and drawing interpretation as well as time management.

Once they understand the basics, they are then granted access to complete residential jobs, still being checked over after each phase.

Once their time is completed and there are bays available in the primary shed the apprentices are moved over to have more independence where the ratio sits at two checkers to twenty welders.
