
Commercial Estimating Manager
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for achieving sales targets, maintaining strong relationships with key partners, and
monitoring market trends and competitor activity to ensure strategic positioning.
Responsible for ensuring that structural steel projects are accurately costed, competitively priced, and
financially viable for both the company and its clients.
Leads and mentors the commercial estimating team, ensuring high performance, accuracy, and
continuous improvement in estimating processes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific
- Sales and Business Growth: Develops and implements strategies to achieve sales targets,
ensuring the company's competitive position in the market while maintaining profitability. - Client and Partner Relationships: Builds and sustains strong relationships with key clients and
industry partners to foster long-term business opportunities and collaboration. - Market Analysis and Competitor Insights: Monitors industry trends, market conditions, and
competitor pricing to refine estimating strategies and enhance the company's competitive
advantage. - Team Leadership and Development: Leads, mentors, and supports the commercial estimating
team, ensuring skill development, process improvement, and high levels of accuracy in project
costing. - Process Optimisation: Continuously reviews and refines estimating methodologies, systems,
and workflows to enhance efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness within the estimating team. - Reviewing and analysing project plans, drawings, specifications, and other documents to
understand the scope of work and materials required; - Quantify the amount of structural steel and other materials needed for the project based on the
plans and specifications (material takeoffs); - Cost estimation: Using the quantities obtained from the material takeoffs, they calculate the
costs of materials, labour, equipment, and any other project expenses; - Labour and Equipment Costs: assessing the labour and equipment requirements for the
project and determine associated costs, considering factors such as labour rates, productivity,
and equipment rental costs; - May obtain quotes from subcontractors for specific aspects of the project, such as installation or
fabrication, and incorporate these costs into the overall estimate; - Risk Assessment: evaluating potential risks and uncertainties associated with the project and
may include contingencies in the estimate to account for unforeseen circumstances. - Preparation of Bid Proposals: Based on the cost estimate, preparing detailed bid proposals
outlining the scope of work, pricing breakdown, and any other relevant information required for
submitting bids to clients; - Collaborating with Project Teams: working closely with project managers, engineers, and
other team members to ensure accurate and comprehensive estimates that meet project
requirements and client expectations; - Cost Control and Value Engineering: Throughout the project lifecycle, may provide input on
cost-saving measures and value engineering alternatives to help optimise project costs without
compromising quality or safety; - Liaising and negotiating with clients and customers;
- Managing multiple projects simultaneously based on priority.
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Experience: Proven experience as both a commercial structural steel estimator and a
commercial structural steel estimating manager is essential. - Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret complex project plans, specifications, and other
technical documents to produce accurate estimates. - People Skills: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage, mentor, and
support a team of two estimators. - Project Management Knowledge: Familiarity with project management principles, timelines,
and the ability to coordinate effectively with various stakeholders. - Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in quantifying materials, labour, and costs, ensuring
comprehensive and error-free estimates. - Industry Knowledge: A sound understanding of structural steel materials, fabrication processes,
and construction industry standards. - Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to
present estimates and proposals clearly to clients and project teams. - Time Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritising tasks and
meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office: High level of competency with the MS Office Suite, particularly
MS Excel. - Drivers Licence

- Experience with Bluebeam Revu and Tekla program
- Contract administration experience
