Boilermaker Apprenticeship
Our full time, 4-year-long boilermaker apprenticeship provides an opportunity to learn all the details about structural steel construction and fabrication.
Our Apprentice Training Shed opened in October 2021 and started training apprentices in February 2022. We have a fully qualified boilermaker dedicated to the Training Shed. We operate in two shifts: the morning shift runs from 6am to 2.10pm, and the afternoon shift from 3pm to 11.10pm.
Evan runs the shed and teaches the apprentices how to appropriately use hand tools, read drawings, fabricate, and weld. He teaches the ins and outs of the welders and how to use them. Including setting them up, adjusting controls, refilling wire and basic adjustments and things to look out for.
He does this in both a class like setting with the 6 apprentices, as well as one on one in order to keep them on the same level. This encourages our apprentices to feel comfortable, knowing there is someone there specifically to assist them.
During the apprenticeship they'll gain hands-on experience in:
- Welding Techniques: MIG and ARC welding, learn essential skills for joining steel components.
- Technical Drawings: Interpretation of technical drawings, vital for precision fabrication.
- Cutting and Shaping: Develop proficiency in manual and Oxy cutting techniques to shape steel accurately.
- Machine Operations: Gain insight into operating machinery such as croppers, drill presses, CNC Plasma cutter and CNC Beamlines.
- Acceptance Criteria: Understand Australian Standard fabrication tolerances, ensuring quality in every detail.
On average we have 6 apprentices in the training shed at one time. This group of people changes approximately every 6-12 months, before they then move into our primary shed.
Once apprentices have been put into the training shed, they start by making stillages, which are used to hold and transport steel for Stevens. This gives them a task to be responsible for, teaching them the basics of fabrication and drawing interpretation as well as time management.
Once they understand the basics, they are then granted access to complete residential jobs, still being checked over after each phase.
Once their time is completed and there are bays available in the primary shed the apprentices are moved over to have more independence where the ratio sits at two checkers to twenty welders.
Upon receiving your application for the Boilermaker Apprenticeship, we will invite you for an in-person interview. Should the interview be successful, you will be required to complete a paid work trial. If you excel during the trial, we will extend an offer for the apprenticeship.
